We used Marine Vinyl which we purchased at Joann Fabric.  You can also make these fun bookmarks from good quality felt such as Wool felt but I really like the way they turned out with Marine Vinyl so that is what I recommend. 

The letters ARE EMBEDDED into the bookmark files and here's what the letters look like:
